Have you ever noticed how you feel excitement, nervousness or dread in your stomach before your mind even has time to process what is happening? That is because your gut is quite literally your second brain. In fact, your digestive tract contains millions of nerve cells that communicate constantly with your head. Long before modern science began mapping out the complex world of our gut bacteria, ancient civilisations and pioneering doctors knew a fundamental truth: a healthy body begins with a healthy colon.
At Complete Health Clinic at The Lowry in Manchester, we have been performing colonic hydrotherapy for 20 years, and we look at your health through a lens of total integrity, safety and authentic care. With over 30,000 clients treated and nearly 500 five-star reviews, we have seen first-hand how transformative colon hydrotherapy can be.
However, because we care so deeply about our profession and the people who walk through our doors, we operate under a strict, gentle rule: if we are ever in doubt about your suitability for treatment, we will never treat.
In this comprehensive guide, we will break down the incredible history of this therapy, how your unique internal ecosystem works and — most importantly — the medical safety boundaries (called contraindications) that we use to protect you.
From Pharaohs to Cornflakes: A Fascinating History of Colon Hydrotherapy
While some people view colon hydrotherapy as a modern wellness trend, it is actually one of the oldest recorded health practices in human history.
The Ancient Egyptians
The concept of internal cleansing was actually introduced by the Egyptians — yes, the Egyptians! Ancient papyrus records from as far back as 1500 BC detail how Egyptian physicians used water cleansing to maintain health.
They believed that toxins formed by undigested food in the bowel could travel into the bloodstream, causing illness and fever. For the Pharaohs, keeping the internal body pure was just as vital as external cleanliness.
Dr John Harvey Kellogg
Fast forward to the early 20th century, and colonics found a massive advocate in Dr John Harvey Kellogg — the famous medical doctor and founder of Kellogg’s Cornflakes. Dr Kellogg was a passionate believer in holistic health, exercise and diet.
At his world-renowned Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan, he used colon hydrotherapy as a core treatment for thousands of patients. He is often quoted as saying that over 90% of the illnesses he saw originated in a malfunctioning, sluggish bowel.
Professional Training and Standards Today
Today, the therapy has evolved into a highly sophisticated, gentle practice with strict professional standards. Helen at Complete Health Clinic is a proud member of the Association of Registered Colon Hydrotherapists (ARCH), which is the exact professional body she trained with. ARCH sets the gold standard for the industry in the UK.
Being an ARCH member means:
- We adhere to an incredibly strict code of ethics and professional clinical conduct.
- We use state-of-the-art, hygienic, professional-grade equipment.
- We undergo continuous professional development to keep our knowledge sharp.
- We treat our profession with the absolute highest level of medical seriousness.
Your Gut Microbiome: A Personalised Little Ecosystem
The pioneering nutritionist Bernard Jensen famously stated that “all disease can start in the gut.” Today, modern gastroenterology is taking a keen interest in this idea, focusing heavily on what we call the gut microbiome.
Think of your microbiome as a beautiful, thriving, highly individual little ecosystem. It is completely personalised to you, much like a biological fingerprint. This ecosystem is home to trillions of microscopic bacteria, fungi and viruses that work around the clock to digest your food, manufacture vitamins and support your immune system.
When your gut ecosystem is happy, balanced and functioning smoothly, many people find the positive effects ripple outward to the rest of the body:
- Your Skin: Many clients find their skin looks clearer when their digestion is working well.
- Your Lungs & Breathing: May feel easier, as a happy gut plays a part in keeping general inflammation in check.
- Your Thyroid & Metabolism: May function more predictably, as gut health plays a part in hormonal conversion.
- Your Eyes & Mental Clarity: May feel brighter, free from the sluggishness that often comes with chronic constipation.
While automated online tools like ChatGPT can give you generic lists of health facts, they do not possess human clinical intuition or 20 years of hands-on experience. Real well-being requires a genuine human connection, tailored advice and an uncompromised commitment to your physical safety.
What Are the Contraindications for Colonic Hydrotherapy?
Because we care about you with total honesty and integrity, we want to talk openly about “contraindications”. This is simply the medical term for reasons or health conditions that mean a person cannot have a specific treatment.
Think of it like an airport safety checklist. Colonics are wonderful for the vast majority of people, but if specific underlying medical factors are present, introducing water into the bowel could stress your body or irritate delicate tissues.
We divide colonic hydrotherapy contraindications into two distinct categories: Absolute (where treatment is completely prohibited for your safety) and Relative (where we need to look closer, take extra precautions or consult your medical team).
Absolute Contraindications: Who Can’t Have a Colonic?
If you currently have any of the following conditions, we cannot perform colon hydrotherapy. This is because your internal tissues might be temporarily fragile, or your vital organs may be working extra hard to manage your health.
- Active inflammatory conditions — Active Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Diverticulitis, Active Colitis.
The lining of the colon is actively inflamed, delicate and irritated. Introducing water is only safe when the gut is calm and entirely out of a flare-up. - Structural & tissue weakness — Abdominal Hernia, Aneurysm, Fistula, Fissures, Ileus (painful obstruction of the lower small intestine).
Weakened arterial walls, abnormal tissue connections or active painful tears require rest to heal and must not experience internal pressure. - Anorectal concerns — Severe Haemorrhoids, Rectal Bleeding.
Swollen or dilated blood vessels around the anus can bleed or burst easily. In these cases, inserting the gentle speculum may be uncomfortable or impossible. - Major organ health — Colon or Kidney Cancer, Cirrhosis of the Liver, Congestive Heart Failure, Severe Cardiac Disease, Renal Insufficiency, Severe Prostate Problems.
Advanced organ conditions mean your body’s fluid management and circulatory systems are working under high pressure and should not be challenged. - Circulation & fluid balance — Uncontrolled High or Low Blood Pressure, Severe Anaemia, Severe Persistent Diarrhoea.
Uncontrolled high pressure carries clotting risks; low pressure or severe anaemia limits oxygen delivery, creating a fainting risk. - Life stages — Pregnancy, Children under 18 years.
Filling the colon with water during pregnancy can put unwanted, uncomfortable physical pressure on the developing baby.
Post-Surgery Timelines (Giving the Body Time to Heal)
If you have recently had an operation, your body builds delicate scar tissue as it mends itself. Our timelines for treatment after surgery are intentionally conservative to protect that healing process.
These healing windows can sometimes be shortened, but only if you provide a written letter of support from your medical specialist:
- Recent Laparoscopy (Keyhole Surgery): Please wait a minimum of 6 weeks.
- Recent Bowel Biopsy: Please wait a minimum of 12 weeks.
- Recent Prostate Biopsy (made through the bowel): Please wait a minimum of 12 weeks.
- Recent Abdominal Surgery (e.g. Hysterectomy): Please wait a minimum of 26 weeks.
- Recent Surgery of the Colon or Rectum: Please wait a minimum of 26 weeks to prevent stress on growing scar tissue.
Relative Contraindications: When We Need a Closer Look
A relative contraindication does not mean an automatic “no”. Instead, it means that your suitability is highly specific to you. As an ARCH-registered therapist, Helen will personally assess your health history and may work in tandem with your GP or consultant to ensure a safe, beautifully managed session.
- Inflammatory Bowel Disorders in Remission: If you have Crohn’s or Colitis but it has been completely quiet and in remission for at least 6 months, many clients find a gentle treatment beautifully supportive.
- Diverticulosis: If you have diverticula pockets but have been entirely free from an active, painful episode of diverticulitis for at least 3 months, you are usually welcome to book.
- Diabetes: There is a minor risk of a blood sugar drop (hypoglycaemia) during relaxation. We simply ask that you eat a proper, nourishing meal shortly before arriving at the clinic.
- Chemotherapy & Active Cancer Treatments: These vital treatments can cause temporary systemic inflammation, low blood counts or general physical fatigue. We love to support clients through their recoveries, but we will always coordinate closely with your medical team first.
- Anal Tears & Mild Haemorrhoids: We will perform a very gentle Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) first. If your tissues show a good, comfortable tolerance to the speculum, we can gently proceed.
- Long-Term Oral or Rectal Steroids: Steroid medications can naturally thin bodily tissues over time. We assess your dosage and history to ensure everything is perfectly safe.
- Other Conditions: Controlled high blood pressure (managed by your doctor with a stable diuretic prescription), mild hypotension, tight sphincters or inguinal hernias all receive a personalised assessment to protect your comfort.
A Complementary Partnership: We Are Here to Talk
Colon hydrotherapy is an incredibly supportive, gentle complementary therapy. It works beautifully alongside conventional medicine, but it is never a substitute for traditional medical care by your GP. If you have a serious medical condition or believe you experience one of the absolute contraindications listed above, please speak with your doctor first.
If you are feeling nervous, confused by contradictory information online, or just want an honest, compassionate answer about your unique digestion, please reach out to us. We don’t use automated robocalls or cold text services. We believe in high-integrity, authentic care.
When you get in touch with Complete Health Clinic, you get a real, empathetic human being who has spent two decades helping thousands of people feel comfortable, lighter and vibrant again.
