Embracing the Autumn Reset: Gentle Gut Health for the Season Ahead
What a summer we’ve had! Long, light evenings, holidays, BBQs, meals out, ice creams, perhaps a little more fizz than usual… and if your gut could talk, it might currently be saying, “Lovely summer. Could we perhaps have a little routine now?”
Autumn is actually a brilliant time to press the reset button—not with a punishing detox or a fridge full of green juice, but with a few simple habits that support your digestive system, your nervous system, and your overall wellbeing.
1. Don’t Forget the Basics
Sometimes the most effective “gut reset” isn’t glamorous at all.
- Drink enough water.
- Eat regularly.
- Chew your food properly.
- Get moving.
- Sleep.
And perhaps most importantly: give yourself time to actually eat.
Your digestive system is influenced by your nervous system, and constantly eating while rushing, working, or scrolling isn’t exactly an invitation to rest and digest.
A short walk after meals can be a wonderfully simple habit too. Movement supports normal bowel function and can help you feel less sluggish after eating.
2. Eat with the Season
One of the easiest ways to give your gut some love is to get back to eating plenty of whole, seasonal foods.
Think apples, pears, plums, squash, pumpkin, carrots, beetroot, sweet potatoes, leeks, cabbage, kale, and other autumn vegetables.
These foods provide fibre, vitamins, minerals, and, importantly, a variety of plant compounds. Fibre is particularly useful for your gut microbiome because many types of fibre are fermented by gut bacteria, producing short-chain fatty acids that play an important role in gut health.
And no, your gut doesn’t need you to survive exclusively on salads. Warm, nourishing food absolutely counts. In fact, autumn is the perfect excuse to swap the summer grazing for proper meals: roasted vegetables, porridge, stews, baked apples, and warming soups.
3. A Bowl of Autumn Comfort
Try this simple Roasted Butternut Squash & Ginger Soup:
Ingredients
- 1 butternut squash, peeled and cubed
- 2 carrots
- 1 onion
- 2 garlic cloves
- A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger
- 750ml vegetable stock
- A drizzle of olive oil
- Black pepper
- Optional: a pinch of turmeric and a spoonful of natural yoghurt to serve
Method
- Roast the squash, carrots, onion, and garlic until tender and caramelised.
- Add to a saucepan with the ginger and stock.
- Simmer for around 10 minutes, then blend until smooth.
Simple, warming, and packed with plant goodness.
4. What About Supplements?
This is where we like to keep things authentic rather than throwing the entire contents of a health-food shop at your digestive system.
Supplements can have a place, but they aren’t a substitute for a varied diet—and more isn’t necessarily better.
Depending on your individual diet and circumstances, things such as vitamin D, magnesium, or a fibre supplement may be appropriate, but the right choice varies from person to person. Some supplements can also interact with medications or cause digestive symptoms themselves. Just ask myself or Lucy next time you are having your appointment.
And probiotics? They are not one-size-fits-all. Different strains have different evidence for different purposes, so “more bacteria” doesn’t automatically mean “better gut.”
If you’re considering supplements, it’s worth getting personalised advice with a Gutmap Microbiome Test rather than following the latest TikTok trend.
5. Your Gut Likes Calm Too
Here’s something we don’t talk about enough in digestive health: your gut and your nervous system are in constant conversation.
When we’re stressed, the body prioritises dealing with the perceived threat rather than leisurely digesting dinner. So an autumn reboot shouldn’t only happen in the kitchen. It can happen through:
- Slower mornings
- Walking outdoors
- Breathing exercises
- Meditation
- Massage
- Gentle movement
- Or simply giving yourself permission to stop
Join Us: September Soundbaths
This September, we’re bringing back our Soundbaths to help you pause and recalibrate:
- Thursday 17th September – 7:00 PM | The Lowry Hotel
- Sunday 20th September – 7:00 PM | Glebe Farm, Astbury, Congleton
Come and lie down, switch off, and allow the sound to do the work while you simply breathe and be.
Soundbaths are a relaxation practice, rather than a medical treatment, but creating dedicated time for relaxation can be a lovely way to support your overall wellbeing and help shift you out of constant “go mode”.
Your Autumn Reboot Doesn’t Need to Be Extreme
Forget the idea that you need to punish your body for enjoying the summer. You don’t.
Your gut doesn’t need guilt. It needs consistency, nourishment, movement, hydration, sleep, and a little kindness.
So this autumn, think less “detox” and more “reset my routine.”
- Eat the apple.
- Make the soup.
- Go for the walk.
- Put your phone down while you eat.
- Take a deep breath.
- And maybe, just maybe, listen to your gut.
